What is Generative UI? It’s a novel capability enabling Google’s Gemini 3 Pro, to dynamically create entire user experiences, not just static content.
Google announced it in their blog post yesterday, stating: “We introduce a novel implementation of generative UI, enabling AI models to create immersive experiences and interactive tools and simulations, all generated completely on the fly for any prompt. This is now rolling out in the Gemini app and Google Search, starting with AI Mode.”
Google references their new paper (“Generative UI: LLMs are Effective UI Generators“), where they describe the core principles that enabled our implementation of generative UI and demonstrate the effective viability of this new paradigm. Their evaluations indicate that, when ignoring generation speed, the interfaces from our generative UI implementations are strongly preferred by human raters compared to standard LLM outputs. This work represents a first step toward fully AI-generated user experiences, where users automatically get dynamic interfaces tailored to their needs, rather than having to select from an existing catalog of applications.
Google provides a handful of examples to illustrate the point: Getting tailored fashion advice, Learning about fractals and Teaching mathematics, as well as a link to a project page on Github, which shows several other examples, which (I have to admit) look pretty cool!
As mentioned above, it’s rolling out in the Gemini app and Google Search. Here’s more about the implementation of each:
Gemini App
The rollout in the Gemini app includes two experiences, “dynamic view” and “visual layout.” Dynamic View is built directly on the Generative UI implementation. For each prompt, Gemini designs and codes a fully customized, interactive response. It can contextually adapt both the content and the interface features.
- Example of Contextual Adaptation: The system understands that “explaining the microbiome to a 5-year-old requires different content and a different set of features than explaining it to an adult.”
- Use Cases: The technology supports a wide range of scenarios, including interactive learning about probability, practical assistance with event planning, receiving tailored fashion advice, and creating a virtual art gallery complete with contextual information for each piece.
Google Search: AI Mode
Within Google Search, Generative UI is integrated into AI Mode to unlock dynamic visual experiences.
- Function: AI Mode interprets the user’s intent to instantly build bespoke generative user interfaces, such as interactive tools and simulations, directly within the search experience.
- Objective: The goal is to create a dynamic environment optimized for “deep comprehension and task completion.”
- Availability: These capabilities are available for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. Users can access them by selecting “Thinking” from the model drop-down menu in AI Mode.
Technical Implementation Framework
The Generative UI system is built upon Google’s Gemini 3 Pro model, augmented with three critical components to enable the dynamic generation of interfaces:
- Tool access: A server provides access to several key tools, like image generation and web search. This allows the results to be made accessible to the model to increase quality or sent directly to the user’s browser to improve efficiency.
- Carefully crafted system instructions: The system is guided by detailed instructions that include the goal, planning, examples and technical specifications, including formatting, tool manuals, and tips for avoiding common errors.
- Post-processing: The model’s outputs are passed through a set of post-processors to address potential common issues.
Here’s a high-level system overview of the generative UI implementation:

Styling and Customization
The system offers flexibility in visual presentation. For specific products, it can be configured to generate all assets and interfaces in a consistent, predefined style (e.g., the “Wizard Green” style shown in examples). In the absence of specific instructions, the UI will automatically select a style. Users can also influence the visual design through their prompts, as demonstrated in the Gemini app’s dynamic view.
Future Outlook
Google notes: “We are still in the early days of generative UI, and important opportunities for improvement remain” – those “opportunities” include the “current implementation can sometimes take a minute or more to generate results” and there are “occasional” inaccuracies in the outputs (big surprise there! 😉). Still, this technology represents a significant step toward fully tailored, on-demand digital experiences. Down the road, we may wonder how we ever used generative AI capabilities without it!
