The Wonderful World of Legal Technology: Legal Tech Trends

Sheila Grela is the “Energizer Bunny” of legal technology education. And she recently wrote an article about the Wonderful World of Legal Technology that has some useful stats and benefits of legal tech training.

Sheila’s article, The Wonderful World of Legal Technology, originally appeared in the Q3 2022 issue of FACTS & FINDINGS, the quarterly journal of NALA, the Paralegal Association. It was reprinted by the San Diego Paralegal Association (SDPA) and made available here.

Sheila’s article provides several interesting stats, including:

  • Percentages of law firms – from Solo Firms to 100+ Attorney Firms – that indicated they were up to date with their essential legal technology competencies.
  • Percentages of law firm budgets dedicated to legal tech over the last four years.
  • Percentage of firms that have invested in remote working software during the COVID pandemic.
  • The most prevalent types of software used by paralegals.
  • Percentage of communications that are now occurring using collaboration tools.
  • Increase in use of collaboration platforms like Zoom and Teams.

And more! Sheila also identifies four potential benefits of legal tech education for paralegals. Speaking of which, Sheila does a lot to provide legal tech education to paralegals – and to legal professionals in general. Along with Joy Murao of Practice Aligned Resources, Sheila spearheads SDPA’s Virtual Lunch with Leaders (VLL), which has an excellent weekly program of legal tech education every Friday at noon PT (upcoming events are available here). Speakers at VLL have been a veritable “who’s who” of legal tech experts and thought leaders, covering a wide range of interesting topics. It’s a great way to make a Friday afternoon more productive, by learning about legal tech and the trends and best practices associated with it.

Sheila’s two-page article, The Wonderful World of Legal Technology, is a quick read, but with a lot of good info packed into those two pages. Check it out here!

BTW, when I say that Sheila is the “Energizer Bunny” of legal tech education, here’s an example: Sheila commented on my post last week (about incident response being an important eDiscovery use case for people to consider) at 6:47am. Not impressed? That’s 6:47am CT, which is where the blog is based (because I live in the Central Time Zone). Sheila is based in the Pacific Time Zone, which means that she posted that comment at 4:47am her time! That’s just one example of her interest and commitment to all things legal tech education oriented!

So, what do you think? Where are you getting your legal tech education? Please share any comments you might have or if you’d like to know more about a particular topic.
