If you’re interested in eDiscovery, you need to know about metadata. Dr. Gavin Manes of Avansic gives you “metadata remixed”, with fundamentals and more!
In the post (Metadata Remixed, available here) Gavin discusses how it never hurts to have a quick review of metadata fundamentals because, as with all things in life, a refresher can do exactly what it sounds like: freshen things up a bit.
Inconveniently for those of us who like things easy, metadata fields are not standard across applications. There are no mandated number of fields, field types, or naming conventions. Metadata fields are dictated by the creator of the application and include whatever data they find useful; digital camera data may contain fields regarding aperture settings, color saturation, scaling, zoom level, and GPS location. These would not be present in the metadata for a PDF document.
So, what are some common metadata fields you can expect to see? How challenging is it to merge metadata from different sources? And why isn’t the creation date of the file as straightforward as you might think it would be? Check out Gavin’s post here to find out what he says! It’s just one more click! 😉 Gavin may not be a DJ, but he is giving you “metadata remixed”, with an important refresher on the fundamentals!
So, what do you think? How much do you know about metadata and why it’s important in eDiscovery? Please share any comments you might have or if you’d like to know more about a particular topic.
