Today is April Fools Day and here are 2024 cybersecurity statistics you need to know! Here’s the catch – all of them are real stats except for one!
These 2024 cybersecurity statistics reflect statistics on data breaches and cybercrime. For the fourth year in a row, I’m testing your knowledge. Can you figure out the one stat where I’m just “fooling”? Answer at the bottom!
I’ve provided links to the stat sources so you could technically “cheat” and figure out the fake stat, but don’t be a fool! Guess first, then check out the sources.
Here are the 2024 cybersecurity statistics you need to know:
- The number of publicly reported data compromises increased by 78% in 2023 compared to 2022.
- 72.7% of all organizations experienced a ransomware attack in 2023.
- Over 380,000 reports of fraud and cybercrime were reported in the UK over the last 13 months.
- 75% of organizations have at least one third-party vendor that has suffered a data breach.
- 74% of breaches occur due to human errors, such as misuse of privileges and stolen credentials.
- Cyberattacks using stolen or compromised credentials increased by 71% year-over-year.
- 40% of business leaders believe cybersecurity threats will highly affect their organization’s performance in 2024.
- 80% of lower education and 79% of higher education institutions were affected by ransomware attacks last year.
- 82% of breaches were in cloud environments. Breaches affecting multiple cloud types cost USD 4.75 million on average.
- Log4j was mentioned in 90% of incidents involving exploitation of vulnerabilities.
- 59% of businesses surveyed in 2024 reported not using a VPN, while almost two-thirds (66%) said they weren’t using password managers.
- 86% of data breaches involve the use of stolen credentials.
- Experts predict spending on cybersecurity training for staff will reach $10 billion by 2027.
- 19.5% of businesses are using artificial intelligence as part of their cybersecurity strategy.
- Organizations with high levels of incident response planning and testing saved $1.49 million compared to those with low levels.
