Alicia Hawley of K&L Gates Thought Leader Interview: eDiscovery Trends

Time for another thought leader interview on eDiscovery Today! This time, I’m interviewing Alicia Hawley of K&L Gates!

Alicia Hawley is an Innovation Award-winning Of Counsel in the Legal 500-ranked eDAT Practice Group at K&L Gates. An industry veteran, she is an expert on counseling clients on all phases of the EDRM, navigating complex discovery issues, and developing and implementing discovery strategy. A huge proponent of leveraging technology and AI to create efficient and effective workflows, Alicia argued and won a progressive decision in the Northern District of Illinois in Livingston v. the City of Chicago (covered by us here) regarding the use of Technology Assisted Review in litigation practice. Alicia is a staple on the eDiscovery circuit, speaking regularly on topics ranging from risk management and ethics in eDiscovery and AI to mental health and substance abuse in the legal industry.

In addition to her many speaking engagements, Alicia is currently the chair of the Sedona Conference Working Group 1 brainstorming committee on Lifting Legal Holds, the Co-Chair of the Sedona Conference Working Group 1 drafting committee on Initial Disclosures and the Director of the Women in eDiscovery Chicago Chapter. She teaches eDiscovery and Problem Solving at Loyola University School of Law here in Chicago and, most recently, is a founding member of Operation Safe Spaces, a global task force created in the wake of the many allegations of sexual assault and harassment that came from this year’s Legalweek conference.

Many of my thought leader interviews in the past have been published in print form, but Greg agreed to conduct and publish this one as a video interview!

Alicia and I covered a lot of topics, ranging from her recent move to K&L Gates to Big Data and other eDiscovery challenges to the hyperlinked files as modern attachments debate and the benefits and caveats of generative AI. We also discussed the current discourse regarding safe spaces and harassment (including sexual harassment) that arose after this year’s Legalweek conference, Alicia’s pro bono work and Alicia’s perspective and advice on mental health and wellness.

As she promised on Friday, you can check out the interview with Alicia Hawley below and also in the eDiscovery Today YouTube channel here!

So, what do you think? Are you looking for a discussion of a wide range of legal and eDiscovery topics? If so, check out the interview with Alicia! And please share any comments you might have or if you’d like to know more about a particular topic.
