Typical eDiscovery Costs and What to Expect: eDiscovery Best Practices

While every project is different, there are typical eDiscovery costs you can expect. Cloudficient discusses those and how to reduce them!

In this article by Shelley Bougnague titled (wait for it!) Typical eDiscovery Costs: What To Expect (available here), she discusses how a major factor influencing eDiscovery costs is the volume of data that needs to be collected and processed. But it’s not just the volume – it’s also the complexity of the data, such as the need to extract metadata, handle encrypted files, or manage multiple data formats, which can further increase expenses.

So, how can you reduce eDiscovery costs?

It’s probably no surprise that one of the most effective ways to reduce eDiscovery costs is through data minimization. By limiting the amount of data that needs to be collected and processed, businesses can significantly lower their expenses. This can be achieved by implementing data retention policies that specify how long data should be kept and when it should be deleted. Regularly purging unnecessary data ensures that only relevant information is retained, which reduces the volume of data that must be managed during eDiscovery.

I say: “it’s probably no surprise”, yet many companies aren’t implementing important information governance best practices that lead to data minimization. If more companies did so, we wouldn’t be looking at an estimated 181 zettabytes(!) (181 trillion gigabytes) in the world by next year. Getting your data house in order is the best first step to reducing eDiscovery costs.

  1. Excuse me for making a critical comment, but in an article about “Typical eDiscovery Costs,” not a single dollar value was mentioned.
