Microsoft Files a Patent for AI That Can Alter What People Say: Artificial Intelligence Trends

In ‘yo face! And by that, I mean literally. 😉 There’s a report that Microsoft files a patent for AI that can alter what people say: in real time!

As discussed by Viktor Eriksson in Computerworld (Microsoft files patent for AI that can alter what people say during live broadcasts, available here), Microsoft has filed a patent application for a new AI technology that can alter what people say during live broadcasts. The technology is designed to automatically identify what is being said and can remove or replace words, as well as adjust the speaker’s mouth movements to match the edited audio, reports Futurism.

According to Microsoft, the technology could be used to translate live broadcasts into other languages, remove filler words, and correct slip-ups – like “um” or “ah” in live speech. It would also be possible to customize the system to individual viewers’ preferences and, for example, remove profanity, offensive language, or “colloquial terms” like the term “y’all” or the phrase “bite the bullet.”

The patent also claims that the system could eliminate “mumbled words, mispronounced words, misused words, misspoken words, offensive words, insensitive words, or inappropriate words.” Replacement words, it adds, may come from an “internet search.”

Microsoft states that the technology could be used for lectures, award ceremonies, sporting events, and live TV programs, among other things.

Imagine the possibilities! It could fix Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe crowning gaffe, where he named the wrong winner, the Best Picture mix-up at the Oscars (hint: La La Land didn’t actually win) and more! Politicians could claim they didn’t say what they really said! The possibilities are endless!

It is also possible to save the original recordings as documentation of what was actually said. Then again, nobody wants that when mistakes are being made (except maybe eDiscovery professionals collecting evidence). 😉

According to Yahoo News, the patent was filed on April 29, 2025, and it was published on October 29, 2026. The primary purpose of this patent is to adapt, translate, and tidy up live spoken video communication, resulting in a cleaner, customized, and streamlined viewing experience that removes the need for manual editing.

Here’s a video of it in action.

Just kidding, of course, but the possibilities are interesting…and scary.

So, what do you think? Are you concerned that there’s a report that Microsoft files a patent for AI that can alter what people say in real time? Please share any comments you might have or if you’d like to know more about a particular topic.

Image created using ChatGPT, using the term “robot making a speech with its words being altered”. See what I mean? Scary! 😉
