1416 Legal GenAI Products

1416 Legal GenAI Products in 1405 Days: Artificial Intelligence Trends

What does “1416 legal GenAI products in 1405 days” mean? It means there has been a lot of activity in legal for GenAI product creation!

In the “Legal Data Intelligence State of the Union” session last Wednesday at RelFest, Stephanie Wilkins of Legaltech Hub (LTH) provided an interesting stat that bears repeating: there have been 1400 days since November 30, 2022.

Why should we care about that? That is the day that ChatGPT was officially released to the public.

Carried forward to today, that’s 1405 days since ChatGPT was released.

It’s safe to say that a lot has happened in those 1,405 days, ChatGPT (and other GenAI models like Claude and Google Gemini) have become ubiquitous in society. ChatGPT alone has 1.2 billion weekly active users, according to an update shared by OpenAI last week.

The world population is 8.32 billion people. So, that means that over 14% of the world’s population uses ChatGPT each week. That’s not everyone who uses ChatGPT – it’s just the number of weekly users. And ChatGPT is just one of the major AI models in use.

But surely the legal industry – being the historical laggards we are in adopting technology – are (wait for it!) lagging behind in adoption of GenAI. Right?

That’s where the 1416 number comes in.

LTH’s quarterly GenAI Legal Tech Map tracks (a lot of) tools with GenAI offerings.

When I covered it last October (on October 25th), the latest LTH map at the time featured 728 GenAI product placements by 587 vendors across 19 different categories.

But according to the latest LTH quarterly GenAI Legal Tech Map released last Thursday (right after Stephanie spoke on the panel) and shown above, we’re up to 1,416 GenAI product placements by 1,117 vendors across 19 different categories.

That’s almost double the number of products and vendors in less than a year. 1416 legal GenAI products created in 1405 days since ChatGPT came out. That’s more than one per day.

Here’s an image of the current map (click on the link above to access the actual interactive map):

That includes 44 solutions found for eDiscovery (which may still feel a little light, but I couldn’t readily identify any missing solutions).

Needless to say (but I’ll say it anyway), it’s a constantly changing GenAI landscape just in legal. LTH says that if you’ve created a legal tech product that incorporates GenAI, or have incorporated GenAI to update an existing product, please let them know at curation@legaltechnologyhub.com so they can include your information in their next map update.

So, what do you think? Are you surprised there are 1416 legal GenAI products created in 1405 days since ChatGPT came out? Please share any comments you might have or if you’d like to know more about a particular topic.
